Early Mosaic Tilework

Spandrel from Baba Qassem Thuluth
in Masjed-e-Jomeh

The examples of mosaic tilework in this screen show the range of colours and the skills developed by the mid-fourteenth century. On the left is tilework from the tomb of Baba Qassem while the picture below shows a detail of tilework from the SW eivan of the Masjed-e-Jomeh, while under reconstruction. Note the precision with which the tiles have been cut as well as the colours of the glazes

The geometry and precision involved in the design and cutting of these tiles is, even now, incredible, particularly when used to cover curved surfaces.
